I work as a librarian at Idaho State University. This spring I was in a position where I had to go to Meridian to cover library services there on a semi-regular basis. On one of my trips I stopped at two recommended birding spots just off I84 which is my freeway home. I wasn’t able to get really close to either of these small ponds. But I’m going to try again on another spring. I think they are really likely to shrink during the summer.
The first is Blacks Creek Bird Reserve. I took a lot of pictures. The pond was far away and I didn’t feel like hiking down. I’m not sure yet about the birds other than tundra swans.
Blacks Creek Bird Reserve:
“This newly dedicated bird reserve is located 10 miles southwest of Boise and is easily accessible from I-84, exit 64. A 600 acre reserve with sagebrush uplands, riparian strip, and reservoir. The area is habitat for over 150 bird species and is also home to many mammals such as pronghorn, badger, and coyote. It is recognized as a Audubon Important Bird Area and is called a ‘jewel of the desert’ by the Ada County Open Space Plan. The reservoir can dry out during the summer, but is a great place to look for migrating shorebirds during spring.” — https://www.goldeneagleaudubon.org/Birding-Locationshttps://www.goldeneagleaudubon.org/Birding-Locations

Lots of ducks, mostly pintails, with an assortment of blackbirds, swans, and geese
Swans
I paused to look but didn’t get pictures at Indian Creek Reservoir
Indian Creek Reservoir:
“Indian Creek Reservoir is another of the important ‘jewels of the desert’ providing important stopover habitat for many migrating bird species. Over 180 different bird species have been recorded at this site. This reservoir is located just minutes off I-84, but is about 30 minutes southeast of Boise. Take Exit 71 and turn south, once past the truck stop look for a dirt road that is signed for the reservoir.” — https://www.goldeneagleaudubon.org/Birding-Locations

Wish I could have been with you with my camera too. Only a hope skip and a jump away. I love these vicarious trips I take off alone every now and then, but I don’t have the best know how you have! Thanks for the directions!
