I was adding the three Cornell Waterfowl foldout pamphlets to my LibraryThing account and started thinking about my bird books. LibraryThing is a website that lets you create your own home catalog of your books. It’s free if you only want to catalog 200 books or less. Paid personal accounts are $10/year or $25 for a lifetime which is definitely the way to go. They also allow the purchase of organizational accounts. One of the features I love is that I can add subject tags to my books. A search on the word birds in my LibraryThing retrieves 77 items including books, pamphlets, movies, and documentaries.

Sibley’s “Field Guide to Birds of Western North America” was the first bird book entered into my catalog, it’s also the one I’ve had to repurchase because I was so hard on the first one it fell apart. Sibley’s is one that rides around in my car so that it is always on hand. Of course there are more books about bird identification and books on how and where to find birds. I have several better birding through study type books and documentaries such as “The Warbler Guide” (still struggling with this one) or Liguoir’s “Hawks from Every Angle.” And then the list if filled out with all kinds of topics … literature: “Shakespeare’s Birds”,  serious biographical narrative: “H is for Hawk”,  gardening, art, humor, adventure. Birds are everywhere and in many, many books.  If I search my library for the word birds I end up with 82 not just the 77 I’ve tagged as pertaining to birds.  Here is a list of the 77 bird related books/movies etc in my library as of today.
