I was first introduced to this book as a young child of maybe 4 or 5 while my family (consisting of three girls and two parents) lived in a suburb of Chicago in the late 60s & early 70s. I LOVED this book. My mother had to read it to me many times. Actually, she probably read it to all three of us since we were pretty inseparable. My mother had a very expressive voice and was an amazing actress and singer. She imbued everything she read with wonder. It’s a great book and perfect for the children of a birder.

there were things she bequeathed to me at that departure. how was I to have known then that those very things would become inseparable, indelible on my life and the lives of my children. we did the phone and ink but time got longer and voices change and so does ink. Of course, I never got to ask “are you my mother?” after all, she did say my mother did some pretty nice things for her.
