Paperback: 346 pages
Publisher: University of California Press, 2007

ISBN-13: 978-0520252806

The size of this book will make it easy to carry in a backpack 4.5 x 1 x 7.2 inches. The first 156 pages of the book are about owls in general. Pages 157 – 274 are about the 19 species of owls found in California and the West. The species accounts include drawings, some photographs and a range map. My favorite section is the one teaching us how to find and watch owls. There is a plates section with large drawings of the owls. More importantly, at the beginning of the plates section is a drawing with the owls lined up according to size. There is a shadow starling and a shadow pigeon included on this plate for comparison. A handy book that I’m going to buy to up my game finding owls in my region (Idaho & Utah) — Jenny
