National Bison Refuge

Featured photo of an American kestrel. It was another lovely road trip day. Left Missoula early and headed North. First stop was the Ewam Garden of 1,000 Buddhas.  A very cool place, the plantings are beautiful, the site is peaceful and it was a great stop. The posing American kestrel was definitely a bonus.

Next, on to the National Bison Range. This is a nifty park with a lovely drive over plains and hills. I got to see Pronghorn, Mule deer, Big horn sheep, Plains bison, White tailed deer and the cutest little Least chipmunk. And of course lots of wonderful birds.

I had a most excellent lunch at the Old Timer Cafe in St Ignatius then some time birding at the Ninepipe National Wildlife Refuge.  It’s not a big refuge, but lots of birds. Sadly I did not have a spotting scope so there were several types of ducks that were not identified.

On the way to my hotel in Kalispell I saw signs about a Gem show. So I followed the signs and ended up at a conference center where a small room with a single vendor selling beads, rock samples and jewelry was set up. Ah well, and Hooray, I didn’t spend any money.
